Race Trip 2010
The annual trip to Haydock will this year be on Saturday 3rd July.
This trip has been an incredible success for a number of years now and we fully recommend it to anyone who has never been before. Its usually a great day out and we have been lucky enough to enjoy great weather every year we have been, its a mixed trip, ladies welcome, so feel free to bring the WAGs. You don't have to be a horse racing fan to enjoy the day, so please come along, there are plenty of bars and its usually a great atmosphere and a great day out. Places will be reserved on a first come first served basis as demand is expected to be high, the plan is currently to organise a 52 seater coach for the day but if demand is high enough we will hire two coaches so if you have any family, friends etc who would like to go please bring them along. Price for the trip has not been finalised yet but will be approximately £30 per person, this includes breakfast, coach fare and entry to the Tattersall's area of the course. The Season So Far
As we go into the Christmas break we thought we would take a brief look back at what has been an excellent season so far :-
Pre-season saw former Broadway Celtic manager Steve Ashton join the club to take the role of manager with Andy Palombo as his assistant. The majority of players were retained from the previous season and they were joined by some excellent new signings as the club looked to make a major improvement on the disappointment of finishing third bottom of division 2 last season. The season got off to a fantastic start with 10-0 and 8-0 wins over Falconers and Bridge Inn respectively although we were dealt a major blow when striker Cisco Casserley suffered a serious ligament injury and was ruled out of action for months to come. Next up was a Lancashire Trophy tie at home to Blackpool side FC Eden. Eden came with an impressive unbeaten record, promotions in consecutive seasons in the Blackpool league and boasting an ex England u-19 star in their ranks but an outstanding team performance saw them emphatically beaten 5-1, Jordan Scholes and Julian Kumah being the main tormentors of the seasiders. Two more league victories followed, Falconers again and Newtown beaten comfortably as Jordan Scholes moved to the top of the league's goalscoring charts with 10 goals from only four games. The next round of the Lancashire Trophy saw us drawn against Premier division side Midland Phoenix who included former Italia favourite James Tolson in their side. Tolson is the all time record goalscorer for Italia and it was two goals from him that eventually condemned us to our only defeat of the season so far as we lost out 4-3, coming extremely close to forcing extra time against the trophy finalists of two years previous. Our next opponents were the Div 2 leaders DC United and in a competitive game we ran out 6-2 winners to close the gap at the top to 3 points, and with games in hand we were ominously breathing down their necks. A hard fought 4-2 win over Asia came next before a break from league action saw us travel to face The Star in the League Cup and a 5-0 win meant we would face Div 1 Red Lion in the next round. Fast improving Gardeners Arms came to Firgrove the following week and in arguably one of the most entertaining games of the season a Lee Robinson header two minutes from time gave us the points after the game looked like ending in a 4-4 draw. The win took us to the top of the table and a 6-2 victory over Asia the following week gave us a three point advantage over our nearest rivals going into December. The bad weather over the past few weeks has decimated the fixture list and we only managed one game in December, the League Cup tie at home to first division Red Lion. As has happened on a number of occasions this season the squad was decimated by injuries, illness and work commitments leaving us with no established strikers, a gutsy battling display especially after going down to ten men saw us grind out a 2-2 draw and take the game to a penalty shootout. Four excellent penalties, an excellent save from Josh Collins and a couple of misses by Lion took us through in a game that showed not only can we play good football but we can grind out a result when needed. With some great games to come in both league and cup it promises to be an exciting second half of the season and hopefully a memorable one.
So, well done to everyone so far but remember there's still a long way to go yet, so lets continue to put in the fantastic effort, committment and quality we have shown so far and there should be ample reward come May !
Tuesday Night Training A reminder to you all, training is every Tuesday night 8 till 9 at Matthew Moss. The management are asking for a big improvement in the numbers turning up for training, whilst we accept some lads work evenings or nights and can't make it the rest of you should be there unless injured or ill. Not only is it good for team bonding and fitness but using the excellent facilities at Matthew Moss has to be paid for and at only £3 each per session it represents good value for money. Recently we have been making a loss due to the lack of numbers turning up and obviously we cannot continue to subsidise the cost from club funds, which will mean subs will have to go up to cover the cost if things don't improve. The squad is getting bigger now with a few new faces arriving and most of the injured returning to fitness, so picking the team is going to be extremely difficult over the coming weeks, make a good impression in training and you will have more chance of being in the starting 11, if you don't turn up others may impress and take your place, you have been warned !
